A little ice cream can go a long way.

Tuesday marked Ben and Jerry’s international free scoop day, where everyone in the world can have a free scoop of ice cream if they go to their local Ben and Jerry’s franchise. Some places, like the one in downtown Spokane’s Riverfront Mall, likes to add even more to the equation with what they like to call “celebrity scoopers.”

“I think (celebrity scoopers) are more fun. The public loves to see the shock come down and to get their pictures taken with them,” said Spokane’s Ben and Jerry’s franchise owner Kari Conner.

Among the celebrity scoopers were Spokane Shock defensive backs Alex Teems, Josh Ferguson, Terrance Sanders and Rod Mosley who scooped ice cream for fans of all ages for an hour.

Though the ice cream was free, donating was highly encouraged by Ben and Jerry’s. The donations went directly to Spokane’s Safety Net, an organization that helps foster kids in need. Each year the Ben and Jerry’s franchises across the world select a foundation to support, and this year Conner chose SSN. The event generated over $2,220 in donations, nearly double the amount of last year’s total.

The players were having a good time, laughing and talking with each member of the Spokane community who walked up for their free scoop.

“It’s always good to go out and help the community, so anytime I get the opportunity I’m down for it,” said Sanders.
