June 12, 2009: After a bye week, the Spokane Shock picked up right where they left off with their 10th straight win of the season, 88-27, over the Stockton Lightning. It was a record setting night for Spokane who scored their highest point total and defeated their opponent by the largest margin in team history.
The wheels came off for the Lightning early in tonight’s game with two interceptions on their first two possessions of the game. On the first drive of the game, DB Sergio Gilliam picked off Stockton’s QB Chad Cavender on fourth down to give the Shock defense their first stop of the game. Then, after a Charles Dillon 13-yard touchdown, Cavender threw his second interception on the ensuing drive. This time LB Kevin McCullough came up with the interception and returned it 25-yards to Stockton’s three-yard line. Two plays later, FB Harrison Nikolao punched into the endzone on a 3-yard run and put the Shock up 13-0.
Spokane’s defense continued to create problems for the Lightning’s offense and came up with a club record nine turnovers in the game. DB Stanley Franks, who was named the Defensive Player of the Game, had three pick on the night tying a club record for most interceptions in a game.
On the offensive side of the ball, Spokane generated 462 yards thanks in large part to QB Nick Davila and WR Raul Vijil. Davila finished the night, after three quarters of play, with eight touchdowns (seven passing and one rushing) while completing 22/32 pass attempts for 310 yards. Vijil came into tonight with 19 touchdowns (11 of those 19 were scored against Stockton in their previous two meetings) and added five more to his season total. Vijil was second on the team in receptions (9) while rookie-WR Charles Dillon led the team (10) and added four touchdowns of his own (three receiving, one rushing).
“With 88 points the offense will get a lot of attention; but, tonight our defense was the star of the game,” Head Coach Adam Shackleford said after the game. “Your offense is not going to put up that many points unless your defense is creating turnovers. Our defense is absolutely relentless.”
Coming into tonight’s game, Stockton was averaging over 50 points a game. But tonight’s point total (27) was their second lowest of the season.
Tonight’s victory is Spokane’s 16th straight road victory, the longest streak in af2 history.
