April 5, 2008 Spokane, WA : - It didn’t take long for the Spokane Shock to rewrite their record book. In only the second game of the 2008 season, the Shock defeated the Lightning 70-12 on Spokane Tribe Field.. After the first half of play, the Shock’s offense put up the highest point total in franchise history (with 42) and held their opponent to the lowest point total for a game (with 12).

The Shock struck early with a one-yard touchdown courtesy of WR Raul Vijil with 8:50 left in the first quarter and never looked back. Vijil went on to lead the team in receptions (six) yardage (111 all-purpose) and touchdowns (four). After the game Head Coach Adam Shackleford said that he was “the best player on the field.” QB Jason Murrietta made his home debut with 106 yards passing four touchdowns through the air and one on the ground.

But clearly, it was the defensive efforts of the Shock that stepped into the spotlight for this home opener. Thanks to the stingy Shock defense the Lightning were limited to only two touchdowns and fewer than 200 yards (198) of total offense.

“I was very happy with our defense,” Head Coach Adam Shackleford said. “But I’m kind of an old school Coach who is never satisfied.”

ADT Defensive Player of the Game award winner DB Sergio Gilliam once again tied the single game record with three interceptions for the second consecutive week. Gilliam's statistics seem worthy of winning the Defensive Player of the Week for the second week in a row when you couple his three interceptions with a fumble recovery 2 pass-break-ups and  four tackles.

But LB Kevin McCullough was not going to be outdone returning an interception of his own for a touchdown for the second straight week. Rookie DB Roshawn Marshall also pitched in with an interception of his own in the second quarter. As if that wasn’t enough, DL Devon Parks added two forced fumbles and 2.5 sacks on the night.

In the post-game conference, Coach Shackleford stressed the importance of winning every game at home. “Championship teams win all of their home games,” Shackleford explained.

So far, so good.

NOTES...The Shock hit the road next week as they travel to Kennewick, WA to take on the Tri-Cities Fever for the first match-up of the regular season...DL Jason Jack sprained his knee and is expected to be out for 1-3 weeks...The Shock will return home on May 10th as they host division-rival the Boise Burn.
