Shock add international star

01/23/2008 2:36 PM -
January 22, 2008– The Spokane Shock announced today that WR Mutsumi Takahashi has been assigned to their 2008 roster. In other Shock news, DL Ben Siegert has been released from the team.

Takahashi, 5’7” 175, spent three seasons with the New York Dragons and became the first Japanese-born player to play in an AFL game.

Takahashi made his AFL debut for the Dragons on May 16th against the Dallas Desperados, amassing 164 all-purpose yards. Prior to his experience with the Dragons, Takahashi played for the Cincinnati Swarm in the af2 under Coach Shackleford.

“We feel like we got the best international player available,” Shackleford said. “The fact that he wants to continue his Arena Football career in Spokane really says a lot about the organization. He is a special player that our fans are really going to enjoy watching.”

In an effort to promote Arena Football internationally, the af2 allows teams to carry an extra player on their rosters when that player is a foreign citizen. Takahashi, a Japanese citizen, is the second international player in franchise history to sign a contract with the Shock.

With the addition of Takahashi, the Shock have signed 30 of the 35 players they will bring into training camp. Season tickets for the 2008 season are on sale now and can be purchased by calling 509 242 7462.
